The Colla Voce Youth Choir was founded in 1985 as the Southern Transvaal Youth Choir, and has since become known for its excellent performing standards. The choir is regarded as one of the top provincial youth choirs in South Africa, and compares favourably with international choirs. The choir was privatised in 1996 and its name changed to Colla Voce Youth Choir. Since its inception, the choir's slogan has been the Italian term "colla voce" which means "with the voice" The choir
consists of approximately 75 Grade 8 to 12 learners, drawn from schools
within Central and Southern Gauteng, as well as the Northern Free State.
School leavers up to the age of 24 who were members of the Choir can
continue their membership with the Choir. A choir year operates from
July till August. Thus a 14 month choir year. Auditions take place from
May to July and can be arranged with the Choir Organiser, Lizelle van Staden
at A new repertoire is studied annually. It consists of sacred as well as popular music and is approximately one hour long. Practice sessions are held every Friday afternoon in Alberton. At least 12 performances are held every year. The choir is part of the Colla Voce Music Foundation, a Section 21 company. The choir is self-funding and managed by a Choir Manager under the auspices of a Management Committee consisting of Parents, the Choir Leader, Choir Manager and co-opted specialists. The Youth Choir is known for its outstanding performances and special friendship bonds between members: coming from different schools and speaking different languages adds to the "magic". Through the years Colla Voce has developed its own unique traditions. For example, the orientation of new members during the annual Choir Camp. After this experience the choir badge is worn with pride. The choir travels extensively throughout South Africa. A number of successful overseas tours have also been conducted, amongst others the highly acclaimed tour through Eastern Europe in 2003. The choir also had a very successful tour to Greece and Italy during July 2007. They competed in the 25th International Choral Competition of Sacred Music in Praveza, Greece on 7 July 2007. Colla Voce received the highest award of all the youth choirs that competed! Usually a CD is produced to celebrate a tour. A commemorative CD was released in 2006 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the choir. This CD contains 20 works from the repertoires of the years 1999 - 2006. So far 6 CDs have been released by the choir. The choirmaster is Henk Barnard, an accomplished musician and national adjudicator respected in the music and choir circles. Henk has post-graduate and international qualifications in music. Marga Sander accompanies the choir on the piano. |
